Five Food Products Not To Buy To Change Your Health


Often we know when something isn't working for us health wise, but changing our habits can be tricky... especially when we keep testing our resolve by still buying the problem foods and leaving them in the fridge or cupboard. Rule number one when wanting to change something in our diet - don't buy it. 

Simple yes. But for some crazy reason we often still put it in our shopping trolly and then have to say "no" to it again and again each time we open the pantry door, until we eventually crack and give in. We each have our weak spots, but five foods we could all benefit from leaving at the supermarket are:


Soft drinks, cordials, processed juices and beers and wine. 

They fill you up with empty carbs, giving nothing to you in the form of nutrition. They also spike you up and then throw you back down, so are kill-joys for your energy levels long-term and many of them are full of artificial flavours and sweetners that have been linked to disturbing moods and concentration. No thanks!

Plus they make you fat because sugars turn to fat when we are consuming more than we are burning - which unless you are a professional sports player, by drinking soft drinks, cordials and/or processed juices it is very hard to do.

The alcohol has the extra caution of blurring the lines of any other resolutions you are attempting to stick to - think about it, its so much harder to say no to the ice-cream after a glass of wine! I'm not saying don't drink... but don't have it in the house unless you are making a conscious decision to enjoy a wine with a friend. Otherwise it can be too easy to fall back onto habitually.


I'm talking Tip Top style...These breads are killers for your digestion and not what traditional bread was all about. Good quality bread is made with minimal ingredients, takes longer to make and lasts for less time. Where as many of the popular supermarket breads these days can be made with as many as twenty ingredients, such as bleaching agents, plastic dough conditioners to make bread dough fluffier, preservatives, sugars, inflammatory oils, and additives to prolong over processed breads and make up for the lose in taste in the faster processing times.

Also to note is when breads are made from refined flours they loose the nutrients you do get from whole-grains. Give these processed breads a miss and if you want to enjoy toast, do so with breads that have the least ingredients and ideally sough-dough or sprouted varieties.


Throw them out! Full of hydrated oils, sugars plus the gluten - cakes and biscuits are often what people reach for when they are feeling low in energy. They are the fillers that we don't realise are going into our mouths and then wonder why our mid-line is growing, or worse, our energy is flailing. They are full of hydrogenated fats that are added in very high quantities and are baked at very high temperatures which results in the production of trans fats - which you want to avoid for good health.


Meat from factory farms comes from unhappy and unhealthy animals. The animals are fed unnatural diets that are full of medications and daily antibiotics to stimulate growth and to attempt to combat the rife diseases that proliferate in the unhygienic and overcrowded living conditions the animals have to endure. The animals - pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks often suffer from illness despite their diet of drugs, because of reasons such as no exposure to sunlight, no fresh air, no room to move and having to live on top of their own faeces. Even if you don't care about the suffering of the animals, I don't think its a healthy choice for anyone to consume.


So many dairy products on the shelves are so highly processed and heated at such high temperatures, that even if you are the rare adult that isn't lactose intolerant, you still want to avoid them. Next time you reach for a yoghurt, or ice-cream or even cheeses and milks now, look at the label to see what it contains. Like with breads, the ingredient list should be low but you will often be blown away by the additions of sugars, the flavours, thickeners, the milk-solids etc. Avoid these types, and be aware of any dairy product that is "low-fat" because its been more processed and will often have even more sugar or flavours that are often culprits in health issues.

If you want to eat dairy, stick to fermented types such as yoghurt and always buy from farms that are organic with pasture-raised cows.
