Compassion for Ourselves

I believe we, as individuals, can think big. We can make choices constantly that will have a flow on effect, as we are all connected in this universe. Not just to other humans but also the plants, the rivers, the oceans, the fish, the animals, the air we breathe and the list can go on infinitely. We hold a lot of power within ourselves, we just have to access it. When we are feeling good this comes easy and the energy flows naturally, effortlessly. When we are off-balance it can become more of a challenge to be present in our decisions, therefore, in my opinion, it is extremely important to have compassion for yourself. Self love. Putting caring for yourself at the top of your list of important "things to do". The top of your list of values, should always be YOU.  By caring for yourself, you can then have more energy to care about others and your surroundings.

When my babies were young I got nil sleep and then didn't take time out for nurturing myself and the immense enjoyment I normally felt with them began to wane. I was not my patient and positive self. It was a good wake up call, that I think many new parents have to realise, that I was a much better parent if I took care of myself. To me this meant getting my husband to help on alternating nights and making my morning yoga practice a non-negotiable. That meant moving my arse to my yoga mat, when often all I wanted to do was have some extra precious sleep but the effects were amazing and lasted through the day. My non-negotiable list has gotten longer as my children have grown:) I know this only has positive effects on them.

So while I think it is our responsibility and awsome to make changes that have positive outcomes on the bigger picture, starting at home is the best and most powerful place.

This is my little list of compassion to myself...

  • Be kind and gentle to yourself.
  • Do not compare yourself to others.
  • Sleep early and well.
  • Eat food that will nourish you. Avoid the food that will not!
  • Move your body in a way you love.
  • Be aware of your thoughts and how powerful they are.
  • Spend time with those you love and whom inspire you.
  • Meditate.

Its not rocket science. Its nothing new but it is something that I believe is fundamental to being part of the solution and to simply being happy:) The great thing is, when you feel good, you often do more good and then in turn, feel good... its a win win cycle.

So while I think it is our responsibility and awsome to make changes that have positive outcomes on the bigger picture, starting at home is the best and most powerful place.
